The bicycle
After Ruth’s second husband, Hunter Jordan, died because of a stroke, she began the habit of riding a bicycle, which was a present he gave to her a few months before he died. She rode it through the neighbourhood, where only black people lived, Ruth excepted.
James found (in his early life) the behaviour and her oddities very embarrassing. He didn’t like and understand his mother’s eccentricities and her difference.
In my mind riding the bicycle is not only her way to mourn for Hunter, it is also a symbol of her differences. Ruth doesn’t take care or even notice what the other think of her unusual habit of riding her bicycle. She does it obviously to others’ opinions.
Also riding the bicycle seems to allow her to escape from reality.
I think by riding her bicycle Ruth shows her children how to live without caring what the other people think of them, without having problems to be different as black people in the society, like Ruth handles to be different in the “all- black neighbourhood”.
She also rides it because she loves movement and development, that’s why she chooses this life, why she could handle 12 children. She needs action. The bicycle represents Ruth’s desire for movement. It’s her escape from reality, riding the bicycle is like having a break from her chaotic household, being realistic and not sentimental, but without standing still.
